Mountain Institute, the Joint Technology Education District school, is developing a new program for Yavapai County high school students that will be available for the Fall 2013 semester.
Aviation Technology is a 2-year program for junior and senior high school students that will earn them three high school credits and 26 Yavapai College credit hours. Courses include Private Airplane or Private Helicopter Ground I and II, Fundamentals of Air Traffic Control, Private Airplane or Helicopter Simulation, Fundamentals of ATC Radar Operation, Instrument Airplane or Helicopter Ground, and Instrument Simulation classes.
In partnership with Yavapai College, the high school classes will take place on the Career Technology Engineering Center campus near the airport.
Yavapai College also will offer coursework in an extended program that includes Airplane Operations, Helicopter Operations, Operations and Management and Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operator. These Associate of Applied Science in Aviation Technology degrees take 60-80 credit hours to earn.
Yavapai College Dean of CTE John Morgan presented the proposed program to the JTED governing board on Nov. 15, and the board approved it at its Dec. 5 meeting.
JTED Program Director Jeramy Plumb said he anticipates 48 students will enroll in the Aviation program in the fall, which will bring in about $105,000 for the school year from state funding based on Average Daily Membership enrollment numbers. The total Maintenance and Operations budget needed to cover the costs should not exceed $65,000, he stated in the memo to the board. Tuition is $85 per credit hour, which JTED pays.
Students will not need prerequisite courses to enter the program. However, Plumb said school counselors are recommending students take and pass a geometry class.
