Classmates, faculty, and proud parents jammed into the school gym on May 16 as students received honors for academic excellence and athletic achievements during the Chino Valley High School Academic Awards ceremony.

Gold cords to be donned during the May 25 graduation ceremony were presented to the top 10 percent of the graduating class, as well as gold tassels to those students who have maintained a 3.5 or higher grade point average.

Dozens of students from all four grade levels were presented with certificates for earning placement on the Superintendent's and Principal's List's, as well as Scholar Athletes and National Scholar Athletes.

Departmental awards in the areas of English, math, science, social studies, art, drama, band, choir, physical education, and career and technical education also were presented.

Accepting scholarships to Northern Arizona University in the amount of $2,500 were Ben Lamb, Ryan Marshall, Tiana Newlander, Joleen Pyeatt, and Jordan Webinger. William Ritchie was honored with the presentation of a $6,000 NAU scholarship.

Patricia Sanchez was the sole recipient of a University of Arizona scholarship in the amount of $32,000.

Additional scholarships from the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion, the Yavapai County Mounted Sheriff's Posse, the Ralph Hooker Memorial Scholarship, Yavapai College, and Grand Canyon University were also presented.

Student of the Year honors went to Hunter Fornara (freshman), Eric Mannix (sophomore), Tiffini Moreland (junior), and Jon Szymanski (senior), who was greeted with an embrace from his mother Diana as he left the stage.

"He's very generous, giving, and caring and he will carry those qualities with him the rest of his life," said mom Diana.

Closing out the night was the presentation of the Cougar of the Year awards, given to Austin Popp and Alicia Martinez.

The ceremony was a preview of the May 25 graduation ceremony, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the school stadium.
