"Gentle giants." That is what English mastiffs are called, because of their calm, easygoing temperaments. These majestic giants weigh between 140 and 250 pounds when they reach maturity.

Bob Moon started raising English mastiffs in the 1980s.

"I had two females, Jan and Sara, as pets. I had back surgery and was laid up for two years, and Jan was right by my side the whole time, because these dogs are such loyal companions," said Bob.

"When I lost Jan three years later I was devastated, and I didn't get another dog for 15 years, because I didn't want the pain," he added.

In 2010 Bob and wife Linda bought a female English Mastiff they named "Josie."

"We bred her and Josie had six puppies, we kept two of them. Goliath and Teddy are both her pups. These dogs come from champion blood lines and they have a half sister in Canada, 'Sophie,

that is the AKC number one show dog in the world," said Linda.

Bob and Linda are the owners of the Strong Hold Smoke N' Stuff, smoke shop in Chino Valley. Their three mastiffs, Josie, Goliath, and Teddy are there with them everyday. It is a real treat to go into the shop to meet the huge, lovable dogs.

"These Mastiffs are real people dogs. Every time the bell rings on the door of our shop the dogs get up to greet everyone," said Bob.

"People come to the shop just to see the dogs," Linda said, smiling.

The TV personality Jack Hanna also has Mastiffs and he said, "The size of these dogs intimidates people, but they are so calm that if you were a senior with a studio apartment, this would be the kind of dog you could have. They only need about 10 minutes of exercise a day."

I've only been in the shop a handful of times, when I bring a friend by. I used to wait in the car until I found out the dog (have only seen one) was there. Now I practically run in! I think they are a great asset!

@No Drool, Please........
This community has done nothing but accept us and our dogs. So, if you don't like the dogs, come in at night when they are not here. What is it about the dogs you don't like??????
You are the only one that has complained about them. And if you thought they weren't friendly, maybe you should ask around town because we have customers that come in JUST to see the dogs. They hardly drool at all. WE would like to know what it is about the dogs, besides the drool that you don't like.....they are GREAT enough to make it into the paper, so it must mean they are GREAT dogs!!!

The reason I do not visit this store is the dogs.

These are the best dogs ever. So gentle and full of love. Come on by and see them, pet them, love them, and give them kisses.
