Special to the Review

When the bus drivers' lounge was renovated at the Chino Valley Unified School District's transportation office, a much larger room was created - one with a big white wall at one end. Bus driver and artist Ann Petersen saw that wall as a giant canvas and an opportunity to beautify the space.

With Transportation Director Jeff Lambert's permission, she set about painting a familiar scene from the bus route that she drives every school day.

"It's more or less the view from Reed Road between Road 2 North and Road 3 North with a little creative license added to heighten visual interest. I especially love the drama that unfolds in the sky during monsoon season. It's exhilarating!

"One of the things that I treasure about driving a school bus for Chino Valley Unified is that I get to see magnificent landscapes in all types of weather, lighting and during all seasons. Sometimes, it takes your breath away," Petersen said.

Other murals that Petersen has painted in the Tri-City area include a bus-themed mural for Prescott Unified School District's transportation office and a Hawaiian seascape for Cafe 520 (formerly the Aloha Grill) at 520 West Sheldon Street in Prescott.

This September, she will apply for the state's Artist Research and Development Grant. If successful, Petersen hopes to buy a professional digital camera and fund exploratory forays into Arizona's wilderness, perhaps via an Arizona Highways photography workshop.

"Creating from one's imagination is fun, but to keep things fresh, it's best to draw inspiration from the handiwork of the ultimate creator," she said.

She has a large inventory of photos to fuel future projects.
