Fourteen-year-old Sean Holmes of Chino Valley was honored last month for being the first Eagle Scout in Troop 7617 in Chino Valley, sponsored by American Legion Post 40.
This honor is earned by only five percent of all young men who become scouts.
The requirements to become an Eagle Scout include earning a minimum of 21 merit badges, mastering outdoor skills in camping and hiking, attending National Youth Leadership Training to prepare him for leadership in the troop and his project.
"The hardest badge for me to earn was personal management, because it involves saving money, and I'm not real good at that. But I'm getting better," said Holmes.
He is now busy helping the younger boys (Webelos) bridge up to becoming scouts.
"Next I'm trying for Palms. These are awards you get for staying in scouts and going above and beyond requirement badges," Sean said.
