Between 1910 and 1915, communities assigned police officers to do water rescues, but this took them away from law enforcement duties. Soon, the communities started hiring men and women trained for water rescue and they were called "lifeguards."

Recent Chino Valley High graduate Caitlyn Ballard is one of the lifeguards at the Chino Valley Aquatic Center this summer.
