Penton, Nez turn in 9th place finishes for Cougar cross country

The Chino Valley High cross country team competed in the Peaks Invitational at Buffalo Park Saturday in Flagstaff.

Cheyanne Penton led the way for the Lady Cougars with a 9th place finish in a time of 23:04. McKeisha Nez finished in 19th place with a time of 23:58.

Natalie Malloy placed 48th (26:11), Chloe Vallejo placed 58th (26:56), Hannah Sanders placed 76th (29:24), Micaela Chavez placed 78th (29:54), and Christina Ballard placed 83rd (31:32).

The girls finished in 9th place out of 12 schools in the Ascent Division (same as Prescott) with 179 points.

Freshman Rosio Aguiar, competing in her first race, won the Novice race (2.2 miles) in a time of 15:28.

McKenzie Nez had another strong performance, placing 9th, with a time of 18:54.

Tim Rudiger finished in 29th place with a time of 19:57 and Andy Freitag finished in 32nd place with a time of 20:06.

Uriel Saldana placed 49th (20:44), Stanley Swiacki place 57th (21:16), Scott Blakley placed 78th (22:29), and Daniel Shepherd placed 81st (22:38).

The boys finished in 8th place out of 16 teams with 174 points.

"Cheyanne and McKenzie had great races today. I am encouraged with their 9th place finishes at an Invitational of this size," said Coach Marc Metz.

The Cougars compete Wednesday vs. Bradshaw Mountain High at Bradshaw Mountain Middle School in Dewey.
