CV wrestlers are tops in N. AZ

This year's Northern Arizona Championship for middle school wrestlers took place in Chino Valley at Heritage Middle School. The stands were full of parents, families and friends cheering on wrestlers from eight different schools, including the HMS Hawks.

"This is an individual sport with man-to-man combat and a lot of determination," said first-time head coach Judd Mortensen. "We are so proud of the kids. Wrestling has made them better people."

The team has a no bullying policy and promotes positive encouragement from each teammate as well as from Jake Lake, who has coached the team for nine years, and first-time coach Kyle Lindahl, 2011 High School second place State Champion.

Mortensen said, "We have great parent support with hard working boys that support each other both on and off the mat."

Heritage Middle School won the Northern Arizona Wrestling Championship beating all Quad City, Verde Valley, and Flagstaff area schools. Here are the team scores:

Spencer Coffin, 33 wins-0 losses, and Kendall Foster, 32 wins-1 loss, are both currently ranked number one in Arizona. Individual Champs for HMS Hawks Saturday were Kendall Foster (83), Nic Dalcerro (88), Spencer Coffin (133), Taylor Marshall (142), Ryan Barnum (154), and Alex Cianciola (180).

Finishing as runner-ups in their respective weight classes were Chase Middleton (73), JC Mortensen (78), JoeVelasco (111), and Brandon Velasco (125).

David Ziminski and Brawley Darby each finished in third place.

The Hawks will compete in the Junior High State Wrestling Championships over the next two weeks.
