Esther Elizabeth Hedberg Washo-Kane

Esther was born on March 12, 1921 in Toledo, Ohio to Axel and Olive (Wrightsman) Hedberg. She was the eldest of five children.

She graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She married in 1945, and then in 1954 she, her husband, Robert (Bob) E. Washo and children moved to Prescott, Ariz. Esther became a substitute teacher in the Prescott School District, and then, later she taught home economics and typing in the Chino Valley School System for 14 years. She retired in the late 1970s. She was active in establishing and helping Hospice of Prescott, and she was also involved with her historic neighborhood in Prescott. She and her family lived in one of the historic houses on North Mount Vernon. She continued to live there for a total of 58 years.

Esther is survived by sons, Paul Washo (wife Mary Beth) and David Washo (wife Karen Sue); grandchildren, Dr. Delon E. Washo-Krupps (husband Brett), William Jason E. Washo, CPA, PFS, CFP (wife Karen Colleen); and great grandchildren, Sterling Alan and Alexander Paul Krupps, and William Lucas Hayden and Megan Christine Washo. She also has many nephews and nieces, and great nephews and nieces who live throughout the country. She has one surviving sister, Ruth Hedberg Meeker, who lives in Ohio.

Esther passed away in peace on July 10, 2013. Private family service will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Arizona Prussian Snailhound Dog Rescue. (http://www.prussiansnailhound.petfinder.org) or 10611 N. 37th Way, Phoenix, AZ 85028; 602-295-4518 (www.facebook.com/prussian.snailhound). This rescue was founded and is maintained by her granddaughter, Delon. It saves hundreds of dogs' lives each year by adoptions to loving homes and often, by surgeries and reduced rates. Donations are tax deductible.
