Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies are looking for a Mayer man in connection with the Friday murder of a woman in a remote area south of Mayer.

Sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said detectives have issued a warrant for the arrest of 29-year-old William Hewitt, whom they have identified as the suspect in the homicide. D'Evelyn said deputies, acting on information they received about 10:30 Friday morning that Hewitt may have killed an adult female, began an immediate search and discovered her body at about 1:30 Friday afternoon.

Hewitt was last seen driving west on Main Street in Mayer about 10:45 a.m. Friday morning, in a tan 1979 Ford pickup truck with running boards and faded Humboldt Unified School District emblems on the side. The truck no longer belongs to the school district. It bears a license plate number of AXG9504.

D'Evelyn said Hewitt is 5'11", 180 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair, and a scruffy beard. He was last seen wearing a dark colored cowboy hat, blue jeans, and work boots.

Deputies warn that Hewitt may be armed and should not be approached.

Anyone with information about Hewitt's whereabouts or the location of the truck should call 911 or the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office at 928-771-3260 immediately. Callers wishing to remain anonymous may call Yavapai County Silent Witness at 1-800-932-3232.
