Bomb found under couple's car in Chino Valley

CHINO VALLEY - Police called in a Department of Public Safety bomb squad Friday morning when they found an explosive device outside a home, a police spokesman said.

The device was found in the 1800 block of Rhonda Road at about 11 a.m., CVPD Sgt. Vince Schaan said.

"(It) was placed near a vehicle," he said. "The occupants (of the home) came out and noticed it under their tire."

He added that, if the device had exploded, it would not have caused the car to explode, but "it could have caused injury" to anyone nearby.

Police and firefighters evacuated the immediate area.

"It was a homemade explosive, but we don't know the exact chemicals (used) at this time," Schaan said. "That will take some further investigation."

Chino Valley Police requested a DPS explosive unit from Phoenix to deactivate it.

"They shot the device with a pellet gun to make it safe" and then removed it, Schaan said.

He said police have some leads as to who might have placed the device and are looking into them.

"We will be investigating to determine who the person or persons are who did this," Schaan said. "We believe it was not a random act, but rather a targeted act."
