Cougar Lane Preschool moving
Chino Valley Review

Chino Valley Unified School District's preschool program is moving from its current location at Chino Valley High School to rooms at the Kindergarten Center. This move opens up two classrooms on the HS campus while allowing the preschoolers to be housed in the same facility as their closest peers.

The Cougar Lane Preschool operates as a morning and afternoon program for students ages 3 through 5. Enrollment in the program runs between 15-20 for each class and provides special education services for preschoolers with disabilities. Students attend Tuesday through Thursday. Mondays are devoted to screenings and evaluations on possible new students.

These special education services are provided free by the public school system through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This education law provides early intervention services in addition to services for school-age children in grades K-12.

One of the more common ways that young children become identified as needing special services lies in the process of attending regular well-baby and child check-ups with a pediatrician. Often a referral to a Developmental Pediatrician or other specialist is made if there is a concern about a child's development. This could then lead to comprehensive evaluations to determine if a child has a significant delay or disability and as a result may need specialized help.

Cougar Lane Preschool is designed for these 3- to 5-year-old students who have delays or disabilities. Screenings for children who may be suspected as having delays are held every 45 days. The screenings cover a range of skill areas - vision and hearing, gross and fine motor skills, speech and language use, and social and emotional behavior.

Parents who need more information concerning their child can visit the Arizona Department of Education at In the Special Education section look for AZ FIND under Parent Resources. Parents will be encouraged by the number of agencies and organizations that are devoted to helping them with their child. Of course, parents wanting direct contact with someone who can answer their questions should visit their local school district.

Cougar Lane Preschool has a staff of five, plus therapists who are used as needed for specific students. They are looking forward to the move to their new rooms and are using the summer to get their space ready for August, when students return.
